A HOUSE UNSPOKEN explores the traumatic legacy of the so called "Kinderverschickung" – a widespread practice in Germany till the 1990s, in which millions of children were sent away from their homes for weeks to children's sanatoriums. Instead of care and recovery, many encountered harsh discipline, violence and isolation. These experiences remain largely unacknowledged even today, yet they continue to affect a whole generation that is now part of our society as adults.
The film reveals how this past reverberates into the present, following the work of a theatre group as it brings suppressed memories to light. It raises urgent questions: What does this collective childhood insecurity mean for us today? And how can we prevent that child welfare and education systems truly protect rather than endanger those in their care.
The film makes clear that the answer does not lie in singling out individual perpetrators, but in breaking the systemic silence. Violence thrives where structures suppress criticism and protect abusers. True change demands vigilance, accountability, and active protection for those who dare to speak out—so that history does not repeat itself.
