Loosely based on Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis from 1915, the film explores questions of identity and the desire for belonging and recognition.
Kafka’s protagonist Gregor Samsa becomes twelve-year-old Fabi, who longs to finally prove himself as a full-fledged member of his family. However, the family only accepts those who can show at least one first, proper wound that has healed into a scar. Fabi is still scarless and, in the eyes of his father and grandfather, long overdue.
Over the course of the summer holidays that have just begun, this is finally supposed to change. Fabi, however, is unsure whether he really wants to inflict such an injury on himself. His eight-year-old sister Bea, meanwhile, has far fewer reservations about this very particular family tradition.
When Fabi is finally faced with a daring challenge, he has to make a decision.
